Madama Butterfly

The Atlanta Opera’s Madama Butterfly

10:30 am
Grades 9-12
$10 per Student

For reservations please contact Wade Thomas, Education Manager, The Atlanta Opera at 404-881-8883 or wthomas@atlantaopera.org.

Cultures collide when the young Japanese geisha Butterfly marries B.F. Pinkerton, a dashing American naval officer. Rejected by her family, she attempts to forge a new life and identity, with tragic results. Butterfly’s very human story is for anyone who has ever felt the excitement of infatuation, the longing for a distant loved one, the sting of familial disapproval, the ache of rejection, and the courage to make impossible choices.

Opera combines music, drama, and dance with visual art and powerful stagecraft to tell stories with a unique visceral impact. There is simply nothing quite like hearing and seeing live opera, and Puccini’s Madama Butterfly is one of opera’s the most beloved stories. This 75-minute reduction of the full-length opera features the principal singers, chorus and orchestra of The Atlanta Opera. Students will enjoy the visual spectacle of this beautiful new production, which features gorgeous sets, costumes, and projections to accompany some of the most glorious music ever written.

Creators of the original Singing Tesla Coils, the crew of ArcAttack uses their high tech wizardry to generate a truly ‘electrifying’ performance. Two custom engineered hand built Tesla Coils throw out electrical arcs up to twelve feet long, each one acting as an instrument with a sound reminiscent of the early days of the synthesizer. A robotic drum set accompanies the spectacle, it’s high power LED’s flashing bright colors with the stroke of each mechanically actuated stick, while ArcAttack’s six members churn out rhythmic instrumental melodies. Live instruments meet drum loops and samples to produce rock, electronica and indie with a splash of punk and a dash of metal served with a side of pop. During the show, the MC engages both the crowd and the Tesla Coils by walking through ½ Million Volt sparks wearing the relatively thin layer of his chain mail Faraday suit. This high power performance is unique in it’s elements and energy, being at the same time mesmerizing and energetically thrilling.
